The rights of hundreds of thousands of workers in the garment industry need to be further strengthened.

Most of the employees are women. They work in a bad environment that endangering health and safety. They work long hours and earn very low wages.
In an interview with Odhikar, member of the Bangladesh human rights group, Dr. AhmedZiauddin said that workers in Bangladesh worked on average 12 hours a day, at least 6 days a week, and sometimes worked longer if they were to rush out.

In theory, they should get overtime pay, but they didn't get it.
"Labor conditions are still in a bad situation in many ways".
When asked about the recent unrest in Bangladesh's clothing industry, the canal stressed that the workers in Bangladesh clothing industry worked hard to get a salary of only $50 a month, and the wage they demanded was nearly $100.
But Dr. Ziauddin said Bangladesh's clothing business owners - the most powerful group in Bangladesh - have 37 members in the parliament of Mongo, so when labour groups try to advocate legislation to raise wages and improve working conditions, "owners will block them from within."
Dr Ziauddin said that Bangladesh clothing industry is extremely important to the economic development of Bangladesh. However, because of the poor safety conditions in the working environment, numerous fire accidents and other industrial accidents occurred, and the labor rights of garment workers were not guaranteed.
"In Bangladesh's processing export area, there is no right to organize trade unions, nor do we have the right to organize trade unions in the garment industry. We think this is a fundamental right expressly stipulated in our constitution, but the garment industry generally does not have the right, because the owners are not interested."
When asked about the role of foreign big enterprises, Dr. Ziauddin said that a number of enterprises, such as French retailers, Carrefour, usually own their own storefront, so that they can actually control in many ways, and then affect the production plant.
The labor conditions of large foreign enterprises seem to be relatively good, with a slight increase in wages, and some enterprises provide free lunch for employees, improving their working conditions and working facilities, the canal said.
But Dr. Ziauddin stressed that these conditions "are not standard practices, they are exceptions rather than routines."
We also do not believe that these big foreign companies exert enough pressure to require Bangladesh garment manufacturers to comply with specific standards.
However, under the tremendous pressure from consumers in rich countries, they have been very strict in compliance with child labor norms. However, the reality is that it is very difficult to prove whether someone is 14 or 16 years old.
Dr. Ziauddin said that because the number of labor inspectors was small, it was impossible to monitor thousands of clothing factories in line with the relevant specifications.
