Developing Tropical Mulberry Industry To Boost People'S Income And Get Rich
Planting mulberry and raising silkworms is a traditional industry with thousands of years of history in temperate regions of China.
Today, the Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County, located in the central mountainous area of Hainan Province, is developing the economy in the protection of the ecology, and vigorously developing the tropics.

Qiongzhong is located in the tropical marine monsoon area with abundant rainfall, mild climate and unique mountain climate characteristics.
In November 2006, Qiongzhong County tried to breed mulberry silkworm breeding industry. At present, 90% townships and townships in the county have planted mulberry and silkworm, and the mulberry planting area is 23 thousand mu.
In order to promote the healthy development of sericulture industry, Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County decided to set up a Sericulture Industry Development Research Institute. In April 1st, 11 experts, including Professor Li Donggao, Soochow University, were invited to be honorary president and advisory group, aiming to enhance the development level of the sericulture industry in Qiongzhong, and create a main industry that drives farmers to increase their income.
Professor Li Donggao said that mulberry leaves in Hainan grow long and flourish. The mulberry field can raise about 200 kilograms of silkworm cocoons, nearly four times that of temperate old silkworm areas.
"This is the biggest advantage of silkworm production in Hainan."
China can only grow mulberry and silkworm in Hainan for 10 to 11 months in a year.
Fu Xinping, Secretary of Qiongzhong County Party committee, said that in 2011, the government will continue to increase capital investment to promote the development of deep processing of silkworm, and encourage and support sericulture farmers to control silkworm breeding and so on.
