Ecuador Increases Import Tariffs On Footwear And Other Products

In October 17th, Ecuador daily newspaper, business daily, globe and express respectively published the 16 session of the foreign trade and Investment Commission (Comexi), which recommended that the new tariff reform be implemented in October 23rd.

The reform will increase import tariffs on 567 products, including 299 industrial products, 163 agricultural and livestock products, 101 special consumer goods, and 4 kinds of records.

The adjustment of the new tariff will apply to the countries that have not signed a trade agreement with them. In 2006, the total import of such products to these countries amounted to US $450 million.

Davalos, chairman of the foreign trade and Investment Commission and Minister of production coordination (Mauricio D valos), said that these products mainly include textiles, footwear, tableware, household appliances, dairy products, vegetables, fruits and other products that compete for Industry and agriculture and animal husbandry, as well as luxury goods such as wine, beverages, cigarettes, cameras and mobile phones.

In view of the protection of domestic products, tariffs increased by 5% to 20%.

The reform will increase the 177 tariff codes for textile and clothing and leather manufacturing, with a tax rate of 20%. Agricultural products tariffs such as dairy products increased from 20% to 25%, wine, beverages, mineral water and soft drinks increased from 20% to 30%, and mobile phones increased to 15%. DVD and VCD discs increased from 5% to 15%.

In addition, we should consider increasing tariffs on ceramic products of 9 tariff codes, 36 wooden and metal furniture products, 15 first accessories, 6 household electrical appliances and 30 metal manufacturing products.

After adjusting tariffs, the Treasury will increase taxes by 653 million 900 thousand dollars.
