Sweden Advocates The Prohibition Of Importing NPE Textiles Into The European Union
Sweden has notified the European Chemicals authority that it will compile a report on
Nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether
(NPE) documents.
The document will be drafted by the Swedish chemical administration to list the EU's rationale for prohibiting the import of NPE textiles, which was submitted to the European Chemicals authority before August 2012.
Sweden's initiative will eventually lead to a total ban on market sales.

The Swedish chemical administration estimates that it will take only two years to incorporate the ban into the European chemicals registration, assessment and Licensing Regulation (REACH regulations).

The EU's restrictions on the use of NPE and exceptions are contained in Annex XVII of the REACH regulation.
At present, annex XVII states that NPE is not allowed to be put on the market. If it is used for the following purposes, its concentration should not exceed 0.1% of the quality.

4. emulsifiers in agricultural testing solutions
5. metal processing
6. pulp and water production process
7. cosmetics

Some uses are accompanied by several exceptions.

It is stated that in textile and leather processing, if the NPE is not released into the waste water, and the special wastewater treatment system can completely remove these substances, the NPE concentration can be higher than the permitted level.
